What is Chocolate Hummus?
Most chocolate dessert hummus is made up of these simple ingredients: chickpeas, sugar, oil, cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt. (Ingredient lists will vary depending on what brand you buy.)
The base of chickpeas (or garbanzo beans as they are also known as) provides a creamy, thick texture, but doesn’t have a strong flavor, so when you add some sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, and vanilla, it completely changes the flavor.
What does Chocolate Hummus Taste Like?
I honestly have a hard time with this because I want to say it tastes sort of like chocolate frosting, but it’s hummus! ๐ But that is how my kids and I described it. My daughter was telling her friend that it was dessert hummus, without any hummus. Not true, but might help give you an indication of what it tastes like. Some people call it brownie batter hummus or chocolate brownie hummus and I think it’s less sweet than brownie batter, but it is definitely similar.

Toast – Top some peanut butter toast (or almond butter toast) with a spread of hummus and banana slices. (Add hemp seeds for extra credit!). The rich chocolate flavor of the hummus paired with the crunchy toast is so good. Pair with a glass of milk or almond milk and you’re set for a filling, nutritious, and sweet breakfast or snack. It’s a great choice!
Sandwich – Add a spread of hummus to a sandwich bread and add some fresh fruit like sliced bananas, sliced strawberries, or mashed raspberries.
Nuts – Dip your favorite nuts into the hummus for a nutritious and sweet snack.

Vegetables – Now there aren’t a lot of vegetables that I would pair with chocolate hummus, but there is one! Celery! If you love ants on a log, just swap the peanut butter with hummus and top with a sprinkle of mini chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or dried fruit.
Yogurt – Add a little hummus into a vanilla, plain, or berry flavored yogurt for a delicious snack or treat. Greek yogurt is highly recommended!
