Rate This Recipe

Have you tried chocolate hummus? If not, you are missing out. Chocolate hummus is a delicious dip that has a base of garbanzo beans just like regular hummus, but tastes more like a dessert than a savory hummus. I know, I was skeptical at first too, and it’s understandable! But give it a try, it’s a fun healthy snack and lunchbox item. Everyone will love the sweet chocolate flavor.

But the question always remains, what do you eat with chocolate hummus?! Read on, we’ll go over what chocolate hummus is, what it’s made of, and then share plenty of ideas on what to eat it with! And whatever you decide, it makes a great addition to sweet charcuterie boards or snack spreads like I’ve pictured here.

What is Chocolate Hummus?

Most chocolate dessert hummus is made up of these simple ingredients: chickpeas, sugar, oil, cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt. (Ingredient lists will vary depending on what brand you buy.)

The base of chickpeas (or garbanzo beans as they are also known as) provides a creamy, thick texture, but doesn’t have a strong flavor, so when you add some sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, and vanilla, it completely changes the flavor.

What does Chocolate Hummus Taste Like?

I honestly have a hard time with this because I want to say it tastes sort of like chocolate frosting, but it’s hummus! 🙂 But that is how my kids and I described it. My daughter was telling her friend that it was dessert hummus, without any hummus. Not true, but might help give you an indication of what it tastes like. Some people call it brownie batter hummus or chocolate brownie hummus and I think it’s less sweet than brownie batter, but it is definitely similar.

Chocolate hummus and dipping items

What to Eat with Chocolate Hummus

There are so many different items that work well with dark chocolate hummus. Think fruit, cookies, crackers, and more…I love to put out a spread of the chocolate hummus dip along with some fresh fruit, something sweet and something salty.

Fruit – Reach for your favorite fruit as its always a great and fresh option!

  • Oranges
  • Mandarin oranges
  • Apple slices
  • Sliced pears
  • Fresh strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Banana slices

Rice Cakes – Slather your plain or caramel rice cakes with a thick spread of the delicious chocolate hummus. Any plain or sweet flavor of rice cakes will work. Finish it off with a sprinkle of flaky sea salt for added flavor and crunch.

Cake and Cookies – This might be the most popular category and there are so many options. Scoop or spread with sweet hummus to get your chocolate fix.

  • Pound cake
  • Animal crackers
  • Graham crackers
  • Vanilla wafers
  • Sugar cookies
  • Chocolate chip cookies

Pita Chips – You can do a plain pita chip for a sweet and savory combo or try the cinnamon pita chips for a sweeter option.

Ice Cream – Add a dollop of hummus to your scoop of ice cream. I know, it sounds funny, but give it a try!

Chips and Salty Snacks – If you love sweet and salty snacks, you’ll love these combinations.

  • Pretzels
  • Water crackers
  • Corn chips
  • Pretzels

Bagels – Consider toasting and spreading some of the hummus on top of the bagel. I also enjoy adding a little cashew butter with the hummus to give it more flavor on the bagel. This is great for those sweet tooth cravings.

Toast – Top some peanut butter toast (or almond butter toast) with a spread of hummus and banana slices. (Add hemp seeds for extra credit!). The rich chocolate flavor of the hummus paired with the crunchy toast is so good. Pair with a glass of milk or almond milk and you’re set for a filling, nutritious, and sweet breakfast or snack. It’s a great choice!

Sandwich – Add a spread of hummus to a sandwich bread and add some fresh fruit like sliced bananas, sliced strawberries, or mashed raspberries.

Nuts – Dip your favorite nuts into the hummus for a nutritious and sweet snack.

  • Almonds
  • Pistachios
  • Cashews
  • Peanuts

Vegetables – Now there aren’t a lot of vegetables that I would pair with chocolate hummus, but there is one! Celery! If you love ants on a log, just swap the peanut butter with hummus and top with a sprinkle of mini chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or dried fruit.

Yogurt – Add a little hummus into a vanilla, plain, or berry flavored yogurt for a delicious snack or treat. Greek yogurt is highly recommended!

You can make homemade chocolate hummus or buy store-bought chocolate hummus and try out some of these combinations!
