This easy breakfast idea for kids is brought to you proudly in partnership with Jones Dairy Farm. I’m excited to partner with them again this year because we’ve used and loved their products for at least a decade now, and they show up on our table week after week. (If you’ve ever seen my Costco hauls, you’ve seen me recommend their chicken sausages in BULK!)

🍽️ This one works every time!

One of my biggest tips for raising adventerous eaters? Let them make their own decisions on what to eat (out of what is offered!).

Meals on boards or served family style are the perfect way to let the kids make some meal time decisions. I set up the spread, step back, and let them do their thing. It’s…

🍓 Fun & special: The board format turns an ordinary breakfast into something kids genuinely get excited about every single time.
Ready in 5 minutes: Cook the sausage, heat the pancakes, cut the fruit – and breakfast is on the table before anyone has time to complain they’re hungry.
🥩 Balanced & nutritious: Protein, produce, and energy are all covered in one simple, colorful spread.
🎨 Totally customizable: Swap in any fruit, protein, or carb you have on hand without missing a beat.
😌 Totally stress-free: Putting food out without any pressure or commentary takes the battle out of breakfast entirely.

If you love easy, low-effort breakfasts that the whole family will actually eat, you’ll also want to try sourdough french toast for weekend mornings when you have a few extra minutes, brown sugar oatmeal for another quick and nutritious option, or mini blueberry muffins as a great make-ahead carb component for this very board.

Emily’s Tips & Tricks

  • Pro tip: Resist the urge to set up the board and then coach your kids on what to eat. The magic of this breakfast is letting them approach it completely on their own — when kids feel in control of their plate, they’re far more likely to explore what’s on it without any prompting from you.
  • Feeding kids without pressure: This breakfast is a natural fit for the Division of Responsibility approach to feeding. You’re in charge of what to serve – they’re in charge of what to eat. Setting up a board and stepping back gives kids repeated, low-pressure exposure to a variety of foods. Over time, that exposure – especially when kids choose for themselves – is one of the most effective ways to raise adventurous, flexible eaters.

Notes

Storage: This breakfast is best assembled fresh right before serving. Store any leftover components separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator for 1-2 days.

Ingredients: Any mini pancake brand works here – look for whole-grain or organic versions if that’s your preference. For fruit, go with whatever is in season: berries, grapes, kiwi, mandarin segments, or sliced pears all work beautifully.

Prep ahead: Thaw sausage links overnight in the fridge so they cook in just a few minutes the next morning. Wash and dry your fruit the night before to shave another minute or two off your routine.

FAQs

Is this a good breakfast for toddlers?

Yes! This is a great option for toddlers because the foods are easy to eat in small pieces, and they get to choose what appeals to them, which takes the pressure off mealtime completely. Just cut fruit and sausage into small, age-appropriate pieces. Skip the syrup or serve it in a tiny dish on the side.

Can I make this breakfast gluten-free?

Absolutely – just swap in a gluten-free mini pancake or waffle option, which are widely available now in most grocery stores. Everything else on the board is naturally gluten-free.
