Instructions

  1. In a food processor or blender, process the Oreos until you have fine crumbs.
  2. Add in the cream cheese and process until combined.

  3. Using a small cookie scoop, scoop the dough into balls and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Place in the freezer for 10-15 minutes until the dough has firmed up. (This makes it easier to work with.)

  4. While the Oreo truffles are in the freezer, melt the candy melts. You can use the microwave, microwaving in about 15-second increments and stirring in between, or use a double boiler on the stove. (If using white chocolate, be careful not to burn!)
  5. Remove the truffles from the freezer, roll each ball of dough out into the shape of a ghost. Then, using a fork, coat the entire truffle with melted white chocolate, tap off excess chocolate, and set back onto the parchment paper-lined sheet pan. If you are using candy eyes for the eyes, be sure to place them on while the chocolate is still tacky.

  6. Allow the chocolate layer to harden. Once the chocolate is firm, use the black writing gel to draw the eyes and the mouth.

Notes

  • Storage: Store Oreo truffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. The cream cheese filling requires refrigeration. For longer storage, freeze them wrapped in plastic wrap and placed in freezer bags for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before serving.
  • Ingredients: Use full-fat cream cheese for the best texture – low-fat versions make the truffles too soft. Make sure the cream cheese is at room temperature so it blends smoothly with the Oreo crumbs. Candy melts work better than chocolate chips because they set up firmer and are easier to work with.
  • Prep ahead: You can make these truffles up to 3 days in advance and store them in the refrigerator. You can also prepare the Oreo-cream cheese mixture a day ahead, keep it refrigerated, then shape and coat the next day. They actually taste even better after sitting overnight as the flavors meld together.
  • Tools: You’ll need a food processor or blender to crush the Oreos, a small cookie scoop for portioning, a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, a microwave-safe bowl or double boiler for melting chocolate, and a fork for dipping. Having a toothpick on hand helps with decorating details.
  • Serve with: These are perfect on a Halloween dessert table alongside monster cookies, Halloween cupcakes, or pumpkin treats. Serve them as part of a Halloween charcuterie board with other spooky snacks, or package them in cellophane bags tied with orange ribbon for party favors or gifts.
